J. Olekas presents V. Jocys' candidacy for the Chair of the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture
V. Jocys has been nominated again to chair the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture in Lithuania.
V. Jocys has been nominated for the position of Chair of the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture in Lithuania by the Žemaitija regional ethnic culture council, marking a return to a role he held previously from 2014 to 2018. As a historian, restorer, and publisher of local historical publications, Jocys brings a wealth of experience in cultural and scientific activities, making him a notable candidate for the position.
Currently, the council is led by Dr. Dalia Urbanavičienė, a scholar in the humanities, since 2022. The council serves as an expert and advisor to the Seimas (Parliament) and the Government on matters concerning state protection and policy for ethnic culture in Lithuania. The council, approved by the Parliament, consists of 21 members who provide insights into the preservation of ethnic cultural heritage.
Jocys’ significant contributions to ethnic culture were recognized in 2008 when he was awarded the Žemaitijos Glory Star for his scholarly and cultural work. His renewed candidacy is of interest as it reflects ongoing discussions about leadership and direction within Lithuania's approach to preserving and promoting its diverse ethnic cultures, especially amid modern challenges to cultural identity and heritage.
