Gas Crisis Causes Panic in Bhopal; Hotels Have Only 48 Hours of LPG
Bhopal is facing a gas crisis as hotels and restaurants only have LPG supplies for the next 48 hours due to international supply chain disruptions.
The capital city of Bhopal, India, is on the brink of a crisis in the hotel and restaurant sector due to a significant reduction in the supply of LPG. International tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel have derailed the global LPG supply chain, directly impacting Bhopal where commercial gas supplies have been temporarily halted. Tejakulpal Singh Pali, president of the Bhopal Hotel and Restaurant Association, expressed grave concerns about the situation, noting that their current gas reserves will only last for 48 hours due to government regulations that prevent holding stock beyond this period.
Daily consumption in Bhopal's hotels and restaurants stands at approximately 1,000 commercial gas cylinders. As oil companies prioritize domestic consumers in response to the current crisis, the supply for commercial needs has drastically reduced. This acute shortage puts pressure on local businesses, which are now facing the prospect of being unable to cook and serve food without sufficient gas supplies. The situation is becoming increasingly urgent as businesses fear a complete shutdown if the supply is not restored promptly.
In light of the impending crisis, Pali has urged local authorities for alternative solutions, including the possibility of utilizing coal as a temporary substitute for cooking. He emphasized the necessity of immediate action, stating that if the delivery of LPG does not resume within the next 48 hours, the operational capabilities of Bhopal's hotels and restaurants could be severely compromised, resulting in significant economic and service sector challenges for the region.
