Žemaitaitis told the conservative: 'Not with a husband, but with a Žemaitaitis'

Lithuanian MP R. Žemaitaitis faces criticism and scrutiny for ethical violations, leading to a proposal for stricter penalties for politicians by Dalia Asanavičiūtė-Gružauskienė.

R. Žemaitaitis, a member of the Lithuanian Parliament, has attracted significant scrutiny from the Seimas' ethics guardians for his repeated violations of ethical conduct. Reports indicate that he is the most frequently examined parliamentarian this legislative term, with numerous breaches noted against him. However, decisions made by the Seimas' Ethics and Procedures Commission lack any real legal enforcement, raising concerns about their effectiveness.

In light of the perceived ineffectiveness of current measures, Dalia Asanavičiūtė-Gružauskienė, a representative from the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), has proposed introducing financial penalties for politicians who repeatedly violate the State Politicians' Code of Conduct. She argues that politicians who breach ethical standards often fail to learn from their mistakes, disregarding commission decisions and potentially engaging in deliberate repeated violations, which undermines the authority of the commission.

Responding to the criticism, R. Žemaitaitis has described the scrutiny as a targeted attack against him and made derogatory comments about his colleague. He questioned why he should care about her opinions, suggesting that those who base their lives on others' judgments do not lead fulfilling lives. This incident highlights ongoing tensions within Lithuanian politics and prompts discussions about the need for stronger ethical guidelines and accountability for lawmakers.
