An Estonian children's book titled "Boy and Papa" has been recommended by the Hans Christian Andersen Award jury as part of its distinguished book list.

The Estonian publishing house Päike ja Pilv has announced that the jury of the Hans Christian Andersen Award has recommended the book "Boy and Papa," written by Triinu Laan and illustrated by Anne Pikkov. Since 2018, the jury has compiled a list of outstanding children's books globally, and this year, they highlighted 21 works from various countries, including one from Estonia. Katrin Reinmaa, the head of the publishing house, expressed her delight at this recognition, emphasizing the importance of translating these selected works for children worldwide.

The book "Boy and Papa," set to be published in 2024, features characters that include a very young and a very old man, showcasing their adventures together as they collect joyful memories. The narrative aims to help children cope with loss, especially when beloved individuals have passed away. Reinmaa noted that the jury believes all 21 books chosen deserve to be translated into every language, allowing children everywhere to enjoy these meaningful stories.

This international recognition could significantly boost the visibility of Estonian literature on the global stage, encouraging interest in local authors and illustrating the growing impact of Estonian cultural contributions.
