Mexico ready for dialogue with the US on T-MEC review

Mexico is preparing for formal discussions with the United States regarding the revision of the T-MEC agreement, focusing on key economic issues.

Mexico is gearing up for the first formal round of negotiations with the United States concerning the review of the T-MEC agreement, as stated by Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard. He highlighted that the country has a clear mandate derived from consultations with productive sectors and economic actors, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for these discussions. Ebrard noted that the consultations aimed to ensure readiness for the upcoming talks with the US, which are set to commence in one week.

The initial round of bilateral conversations is scheduled to take place in Washington during the week of March 16, with subsequent meetings between Mexico and Canada planned for early May. Ebrard outlined that Mexico will approach these discussions with a structured agenda focusing on three primary topics. These include reducing reliance on productive capacities from other regions of the world, revising the rules of origin concerning trade, and enhancing economic security measures.

This development marks a significant step in Mexico's approach to reassessing its trade agreements and addressing economic concerns within the North American framework. By presenting a well-prepared agenda, Mexico aims to strengthen its negotiating position and ensure a collaborative approach to economic partnerships in the region, particularly in light of evolving global trade dynamics.
