Advancement in the incorporation of new data in INE voting credentials
The INE's Federal Register of Voters Commission approved the inclusion of gender identity and indigenous self-description on voter ID cards in Mexico.
The Federal Register of Voters Commission of the National Electoral Institute (INE) in Mexico has unanimously approved the integration of new information into voter identification cards, which includes the option for individuals to identify their gender and to self-identify as indigenous. This move aims to provide greater representation and acknowledgment of diverse identities within the electorate.
Citizens will have the choice to decide whether to display their gender on the card, with options including 'M' for female, 'H' for male, or 'NB' for non-binary. Additionally, there will be an option for those who wish to indicate their indigenous self-identification. However, it is essential to note that the inclusion of this information does not confer any affirmative action rights or access to specific social programs, as clarified by the commission's president, Carla Humphrey.
Humphrey emphasized that while citizens can request the inclusion of these identifiers in their voter credentials, such choices do not create any rights to social programs or electoral candidacies. This initiative reflects an effort to adapt electoral processes to recognize and validate the identities of all citizens, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity within the democratic framework of Mexico.
