The Last ‘Dokdo Resident’ Kim Shin-yeol Passes Away
Kim Shin-yeol, the last resident of Dokdo, has passed away at the age of 88.
Kim Shin-yeol, recognized as the last resident of the Korean islet of Dokdo, passed away on the 2nd at the age of 88. He had been facing health issues and had relocated to his children's home on the mainland, leaving Dokdo in 2019 after living there for several decades. Kim and his late husband were known for their steadfast residence on the islet, where they played a vital role in maintaining the Korean presence and identity of Dokdo, particularly through engagement in local fishing activities and symbolic voting during elections.
Founded in 2013, the couple operated the 'Dokdo Love Café', where they offered visitors local seafood and souvenirs, further solidifying their connection to the islet. They contributed significantly to asserting Korea's claim over Dokdo by being the first residents to pay taxes there, a move viewed as reinforcing the islet's legal status under international law. Following his passing, the islet currently has no permanent residents, though around 30 personnel, including coast guard and administrative staff, are stationed there.
In the wake of Kim's death, there are implications for the future of Dokdo's governance and residency. Discussions are already underway between Ulleung County officials and the Gyeongsangbuk-do province regarding how to handle the absence of residents. The family paid tribute on social media, reflecting on the unyielding spirit and lifelong dedication of Kim and his wife to their beloved home at sea.
