The teacher who committed violence against a student escaped criminal responsibility but will have to look for another job
A teacher in Zarasai, Lithuania, was involved in a violent incident where he physically assaulted a student, resulting in his release from criminal responsibility but loss of employment.
In December of last year, a troubling incident at a school in Zarasai, Lithuania, involved a teacher who violently assaulted a minor student during class. The teacher grabbed the student by her hoodie and hair, then slammed her head into a table in front of other classmates. This incident prompted the parents of the victim to file a complaint with the Zarasai district police, leading to a preliminary investigation into the physical harm caused by the teacher. The case was overseen by prosecutors from the Panevėžys District Prosecutor's Office.
During the investigation, the accused teacher, A. M., admitted his guilt and compensated the victim's family for non-pecuniary damages as well as paid for the student’s medical treatment. Given these circumstances, the supervising prosecutor granted the teacher's request to be exempted from criminal responsibility under a bail arrangement for one year, transferring responsibility to a surety. Despite escaping criminal charges, the incident has raised significant concerns about educational practices and the treatment of students within Lithuanian schools.
Authorities have noted that such events reflect broader issues within the education system, which highlights the urgent need for reforms that ensure student safety and proper conduct among educators. In light of this case, educational leaders, including figures like R. Popovienė, emphasize the need to address these systemic problems to prevent future occurrences of violence and protect the well-being of students.
