Plan for thousands of new homes at 'one of Sydney's most vibrant areas'

The New South Wales government has proposed a major rezoning plan that could allow for the construction of over 18,000 new homes in the Burwood North area of Sydney, aimed at supporting a future metro station and boosting local employment.

The New South Wales government has put forward an ambitious rezoning plan for the Burwood North precinct in Sydney's inner west, which is set to support the development of a significant residential hub. This initiative aims to allow the construction of up to 18,300 new homes in close proximity to the upcoming Burwood North Metro station, slated for completion in 2032. The development is part of a broader strategy to enhance the area's connectivity between Sydney's central business district and Parramatta, facilitating growth and urban renewal.

The proposal is expected not only to address housing demands but also generate nearly 4,000 jobs, contributing to the local economy. This move follows an earlier plan that estimated the possibility of around 15,000 homes to be built in the area. Planning Minister Paul Scully highlighted that the new proposal more accurately reflects the potential for growth around a metro station and takes advantage of the full opportunities presented by such infrastructure developments.

The rezoning plan is currently open for public exhibition until April, allowing for community feedback and input. As the government continues to develop housing solutions in response to Sydney's growing population, this initiative underscores the importance of strategic urban planning in balancing residential needs with economic development in one of Australia’s most populated regions.
