Museum of Image and Sound is closed indefinitely after neighboring building collapse in Cuiabá
The Museum of Image and Sound in Cuiabá has been closed indefinitely following the collapse of a neighboring building and subsequent safety concerns.
The Museu da Imagem e do Som (Misc) in Cuiabá, Brazil, has been closed indefinitely after the collapse of a nearby building in the city’s historic center on September 9. The closure was recommended by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) due to identified structural risks following a safety inspection of the museum. As a precaution, the local government has decided to keep the museum closed to ensure the safety of its workers and the public until necessary repairs and technical evaluations can be completed.
The municipality indicated that further technical assessments are required to address the structural integrity of the museum after concerns were raised due to the neighboring building collapse. The aim is to conduct all required interventions to ensure that safety standards are met before reopening to the public. This decision reflects the commitment of local authorities to prioritize public safety while managing cultural heritage sites.
Previously, the Museu da Imagem e do Som underwent a complete restoration in 2018, which included extensive renovations such as new painting, updates to electrical installations, flooring and wall finishing, and the installation of fire safety equipment. The current closure is a significant setback in its operations, but local authorities assure that they will resume activities as soon as conditions are deemed safe for visitors.
