Municipal Secretary of Itapevi Condemned for Personal Promotion in Public Equipment
A municipal secretary in Itapevi, Brazil, has been convicted for administrative misconduct related to personal promotion during his time as a city councilor.
In São Paulo, a municipal secretary from Itapevi has been found guilty of administrative impropriety after using public sports facilities for personal political promotion when he served as a councilor. This verdict was confirmed by the 13th Chamber of Public Law at the Court of Justice following an appeal against the initial ruling. The name of the accused was not disclosed in the announcement made by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The judgment, outlined by prosecutor Juliana Almenara, highlighted that the secretary had abused his position by leveraging public sporting events to enhance his personal visibility and political reputation. Specifically, he was found to have used amateur football events held at municipal sports venues, such as stadiums and community sports centers, as a platform to promote himself.
As a result of the conviction, the secretary now faces a three-year suspension of his political rights and a financial penalty equivalent to his last salary while serving in the legislative role. This case underscores the legal frameworks in place to combat corruption and misuse of public resources in local governments in Brazil, presenting a cautionary tale for public officials regarding the boundaries of personal promotion and appropriate conduct in public service.
