Yobe residents decry abandoned hospital emergency unit

Residents of Potiskum, Yobe State, express frustration over the prolonged abandonment of the Accident and Emergency Unit at the Potiskum Specialist Hospital, sparking concerns about emergency medical services in the area.

Residents of Potiskum Local Government Area in Yobe State have voiced their displeasure regarding the stalled construction of the Accident and Emergency Unit at the Potiskum Specialist Hospital. Initiated several years ago with the intention to enhance emergency healthcare services in this busy commercial town, the project has not seen any significant progress since its inception. Allegedly funded by Hon. Fatima Talba, the member representing Nangere/Potiskum Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, the lack of completion has left the community in a state of disappointment and concern.

The project, which was meant to cater to the growing healthcare needs due to frequent accidents along major roads near the town, has become a point of contention among local residents. Adamu Ibrahim, a local who spoke to Arewa PUNCH, highlighted the initial optimism that the construction brought to the community, which has now turned into frustration as the building has remained untouched for years. This situation not only reflects poorly on local governance but also raises critical questions about the prioritization of healthcare in the region.

The continued absence of a functional emergency unit in Potiskum has broader implications for public health and safety. With a high incidence of road traffic accidents in the vicinity, the lack of immediate medical response capabilities can lead to dire consequences for the victims. Residents are now calling for accountability and action from their elected representatives to ensure that the project is completed and that healthcare services are improved for the benefit of the entire community.
