Yobe to establish drug abuse, rehabilitation agency
The Yobe State Government is planning to create a State Drug Abuse Prevention and Rehabilitation Agency to combat drug abuse and substance dependency in the state.
The Yobe State Government has formally announced its intention to establish a State Drug Abuse Prevention and Rehabilitation Agency in response to the escalating issue of drug abuse within the region. This initiative was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Justice, Saleh Samanja, during a public lecture aimed at promoting a Drug-Free Learning Environment, organized by the Coalition of Northern Groups at the Federal Polytechnic Damaturu. The formation of this agency is a strategic move intended to consolidate efforts in preventing drug abuse and aiding those affected by substance dependency across the state.
Commissioner Samanja detailed the various roles the agency will play, including coordinating essential services related to drug prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and the social reintegration of those affected. The agency is envisioned as a pivotal element in enhancing public health initiatives, fostering youth development programs, and ensuring the stability and well-being of the community. By addressing these drug-related challenges systematically, the state aims to create a healthier environment and mitigate the adverse effects of substance abuse.
Currently, the bill establishing this agency has been drafted and is making its way through the legislative process, having passed initial readings in the State House of Assembly. With a public hearing set for early March, there is optimism about timely approval and implementation, which reflects the government’s commitment to combating the drug crisis impacting residents of Yobe State. This initiative not only highlights the urgent need for effective drug policies but also showcases the state’s proactive approach to a pressing social issue.
