Without headquarters since 2023, the Museum of the Brazilian House will be installed in the interior of SP
The Museum of the Brazilian House is set to be relocated to São José dos Campos, São Paulo, after being without a headquarters since April 2023.
After losing its headquarters in April 2023, the Museum of the Brazilian House is preparing to open at a new location in São José dos Campos, São Paulo. The announcement, made by the São Paulo State Government, revealed that the museum will find its new home in the historic Olivo Gomes Residence, situated within the city's Parque da Cidade. The government plans to have the museum operational again within the first half of this year as renovations of the property are underway.
The Olivo Gomes Residence, designed in the 1950s by noted architect Rino Levi for industrialist Olivo Gomes, is celebrated as an emblematic example of modern architecture in São Paulo. The residence was originally built for the founder of Tecelagem Parahyba and has historical significance that adds cultural value to the museum's new location. The ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve the building's integrity while adapting it to accommodate the museum's collection and cultural programming.
Additionally, the grounds surrounding the residence were designed by acclaimed landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, enhancing the site’s aesthetic appeal and historical context. This relocation not only signifies a revival of the museum's activities but also highlights the importance of maintaining and repurposing historical spaces for cultural institutions across the region, thus contributing to São Paulo’s rich cultural landscape.
