Evicted, Museu da Casa Brasileira will have a new headquarters in a mansion by Rino Levi
Museu da Casa Brasileira, Brazil's only institution dedicated to architecture and design, has found a new home after three years of being without a permanent location.
Museu da Casa Brasileira, the country's sole institution focused on architecture and design, is set to relocate to a newly found venue after being without a physical home for three years. This institution boasts an extensive collection of furniture dating back to the colonial era, alongside works by notable artists such as Candido Portinari and Emiliano Di Cavalcanti. The new headquarters will be housed in a mansion designed by Rino Levi, a prominent figure in Brazilian architecture, situated in a woodland area in São José dos Campos, which is quite a shift from its previous location in São Paulo's financial center.
Previously scattered and without a permanent venue following its eviction from Solar Fábio, located on Brigadeiro Faria Lima Avenue, the museum's situation has been described as that of a wandering institution. The Secretaria da Cultura of São Paulo, which oversees the museum, initially hinted at relocating to Casa Modernista, another architectural gem by Gregori Warchavchik in Vila Mariana. However, this proposal was later abandoned due to concerns about the capacity of Casa Modernista to accommodate the museum's vast collection.
With the move to the mansion designed by Rino Levi, there are hopes for a revitalization of the museum’s mission to showcase Brazilian architecture and design to a wider audience. While the new location may not be in the bustling center of São Paulo, it may offer an opportunity to innovate the museum's approach and attract new visitors in a serene natural setting, emphasizing the importance of architecture and design within Brazilian cultural heritage.
