FG, states adopt unified gaming framework to boost economy
The Nigerian Federal Government and gaming regulators from 25 states have established a unified regulatory framework for the gaming industry to enhance oversight and economic contributions.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with gaming regulators from 25 states, has established a unified regulatory framework for the gaming sector. This initiative aims to bolster oversight of advertising practices, promote cooperation among the regulators, and ultimately increase the sector's contribution to the Nigerian economy. The formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place on Monday in Abuja, highlighting the urgency of addressing the complexities associated with the gaming industry, which is categorized by authorities as both critical and high-risk.
The new framework is expected to pave the way for improved regulatory oversight, as stakeholders in the gaming industry have long advocated for an assessment of various elements within the existing regulations. With the signing executed by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria on behalf of the federal government and the Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria for the states, the collaboration is a significant step towards harmonizing regulations across different jurisdictions, which is crucial considering the rapid growth of the gaming sector in Nigeria.
Director-General of ARCON, Olalekan Fadolapo, underscored that the MoU aims to create a unified and coherent approach to gaming regulation. As the Nigerian gaming industry continues to evolve, enhanced regulation will not only address the existing challenges but also facilitate sustainable growth, ensuring that the sector can make a broader economic impact. This move shows a commitment from both the federal and state governments to support a burgeoning sector, diversifying the economy and tapping into new revenue streams through properly regulated gaming activities.
