Australia Prohibits Online Pornography for Minors – Age Verification Required
Australia has enacted a law prohibiting minors from accessing adult-oriented websites by requiring users to prove their age to access such content.
Australia has tightened its online regulations with a new law that came into effect on Monday, which prohibits minors from viewing adult-oriented websites. Under this law, users seeking access to services that cater to adults, such as adult entertainment sites, are required to provide proof of their age to the service provider. The legislation also extends to K-18 video games, applications, and AI chatbots designed for sexual content, aiming to protect minors from exposure to adult material.
The law is seen as a step towards creating safer online environments for children, reflecting growing concerns about the accessibility of explicit content on the internet. This comes on the heels of Australia's earlier decision at the turn of the year to restrict social media services for users under the age of 16. Australian e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant emphasized the need for similar safety measures online as are already applied in physical locations such as bars and casinos, underscoring the importance of accountability in the digital age.
According to reports from the BBC, age verification can be conducted through various means, such as a digital ID, credit card information, or facial recognition. The law places considerable responsibility on online service providers to ensure compliance, and violations can result in significant penalties, thereby further highlighting the country's commitment to safeguarding its youth in the digital landscape.
