Australia forces porn sites to block under-18s

Australia has implemented new regulations requiring porn websites to block users under the age of 18 to ensure child safety online.

Australia's online regulator has mandated that porn websites must implement strict age verification processes to block users under 18, effective from Monday. In preparation, some sites have already started restricting access to non-members and refusing new registrations. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance child safety online, following significant restrictions introduced in December that prohibit children under 16 from using social media platforms.

The newly established rules aim to limit children’s exposure to various forms of age-inappropriate content, which not only includes pornography but also extends to high-impact violence, suicide, and eating disorders. The regulations encompass a variety of online platforms, including search engines, app stores, gaming providers, and generative AI systems, thereby ensuring a comprehensive approach to safeguarding minors against harmful online materials.

Julie Inman Grant, the eSafety Commissioner, emphasized the seriousness of these regulations, stating that companies failing to comply would face significant penalties, potentially amounting to Aus$49.5 million (approximately US$35 million) per infringement. This stringent enforcement underscores Australia's commitment to protecting children online and holds digital platforms accountable for the content they provide to users of all ages.
