EU reveals total spent on Ukraine

The European Union has disclosed that it has committed €195 billion in support to Ukraine since the conflict with Russia escalated in 2022, amidst rising concerns about continued financial and military aid.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that the total financial support extended to Ukraine by the EU has reached €195 billion ($225 billion) since the beginning of heightened conflict with Russia four years ago. This announcement was made during a speech at the EU Ambassadors’ Conference in Brussels, where Kallas highlighted the EU's position as Ukraine's largest supporter. The previously reported figure was approximately €187 billion, indicating a significant increase in financial commitment in a short span of time.

Despite the substantial aid, there is growing unease and a divide among EU member states regarding the continuation of military and financial assistance to Ukraine, particularly in light of potential future loans. Kallas mentioned that a further €90 billion ($105 billion) in loan support is under consideration, which may be subject to approval by EU member states. Notably, Hungary has recently blocked this funding, citing a disagreement over Ukraine's actions regarding the Druzhba pipeline and Russian oil supplies, contributing to increasing tensions in the bloc.

With disagreements surfacing, the fate of the proposed loan remains uncertain, as other nations, like Slovakia, have indicated they might also veto it. Prime Minister Robert Fico of Slovakia has publicly criticized the loan, framing it as excessively generous. This growing discord within the EU raises questions about the future of its support for Ukraine and the cohesion of member states in addressing geopolitical challenges, especially as the war's ramifications continue to unfold.
