Europe has taken over support for Ukraine
Europe has significantly increased its military, financial, and humanitarian support for Ukraine following a near-total withdrawal of American assistance in 2025, according to a report from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
A recent report from the Kiel Institute highlights a dramatic shift in the support landscape for Ukraine, as Europe stepped up to fill the void left by the United States' withdrawal of aid in 2025. Europe was reported to have assumed almost complete responsibility for military, financial, and humanitarian assistance, marking an increase of 67% in military aid and 59% in financial and humanitarian support compared to the previous years from 2022 to 2024.
In stark contrast, the report notes that the overall military support from the global community decreased by 13%, while financial and humanitarian assistance also saw a decline of 5%. This downturn indicates a changing dynamic in international support for Ukraine, with European nations, including EU countries along with Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, collectively taking center stage in providing assistance as other countries like Australia and Canada contributed less.
The implications of this shift are critical for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and illustrate Europe's commitment to supporting the Ukrainian cause in the face of reduced American involvement. As the situation continues to evolve, Europe's role may redefine international responses to the crisis, emphasizing the importance of sustained European unity and support for Ukraine in this challenging geopolitical landscape.
