X suspends 800 million accounts in one year amid ‘massive’ scale of manipulation attempts
Elon Musk’s X has suspended 800 million accounts over the last year to combat extensive manipulation attempts, particularly from state actors.
Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has reported the suspension of 800 million accounts in the last 12 months, citing a significant increase in attempts to manipulate the platform and its content. This massive action aims to counter various entities, especially state-backed actors, who are attempting to influence discussions and narratives on the platform. The platform noted that Russia leads as the most active state player in these manipulations, with Iran and China following closely behind.
Wifredo Fernández, a government affairs executive at X Corp, emphasized that the fight against such actions is ongoing and relentless. He informed Members of Parliament (MPs) that, despite these efforts, attempts at manipulation have not decreased. The company has been dealing with a constant barrage of efforts to create networks of deceptive accounts aimed at flooding the platform with spam and steer public discourse in specific directions. With a user base of approximately 300 million monthly, the scale of these manipulations poses a significant challenge.
The report highlights the increasingly sophisticated nature of online manipulation and raises concerns about the integrity of information shared on social media platforms. By revealing the scale of account suspensions, X underscores the urgent need to maintain a credible social media environment, especially in the face of foreign interference aimed at influencing public opinion and shaping narratives. This situation not only affects the user experience but also has broader implications for democracy and information dissemination.
