Strategy to reduce new HIV infections reaches 12,897 users

Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health reports a combined prevention strategy for HIV, featuring pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), has successfully reached 12,897 users in its implementation since 2023.

The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) in Ecuador has announced an ongoing strategy to combat new HIV infections among the population, utilizing a method called Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). This preventive strategy involves the daily intake of a pill composed of Tenofovir and Emtricitabine, aimed specifically at individuals who are at substantial risk of contracting HIV. As of now, there are 49 health facilities offering this service, including 39 from the MSP, 7 from the Social Security Institute (IESS), and a couple of community clinics in Quito and Guayaquil, as well as one in the Armed Forces Hospital in Quito.
