Oja was known for his extensive career, which included over 30 years as a photographer for Helsingin Sanomat and later as a freelance photojournalist. His work has left a significant impact on Finnish photography and journalism.

Throughout his career, Oja was recognized for his dedication to telling stories through images, with one of his notable projects being "Finglish – Photographs of Finns in North America." This long-term project spanned eight years, during which he captured the lives of hundreds of Finnish Americans and Canadian Finns. The culmination of this project was a photographic art piece released in 2013, showcasing his unique perspective on the Finnish diaspora.

Oja studied photography at the Lahden Taideteollinen Oppilaitos (Lahti University of Applied Sciences) and was born in 1953. His contributions to the field have been widely respected, and his passing marks the loss of an influential figure in the Finnish cultural landscape, particularly in capturing the essence of Finnish identity through his lens.
