Former SMP chairman Pekka Vennamo has passed away at the age of 81 due to an acute illness.
Pekka Vennamo, a notable figure in Finnish politics and former chairman of the Finnish People's Party (SMP), has died at the age of 81 at Meilahti Hospital following an acute illness. Vennamoโs extensive political career included serving as a Member of Parliament for 13 years and holding ministerial roles in two successive governments, notably as the second Minister of Finance from 1983 to 1987 and as Minister of Transport from 1987 to 1989. Additionally, he led the SMP for 10 years and was a significant voice in Finnish politics throughout his career.
Born in 1944, Vennamo began his political journey early, being elected to Helsinki's City Council in 1968. He garnered considerable popularity, notably becoming the "voting king" in the 1983 parliamentary elections with over 25,000 votes. His achievements extended beyond politics, as he took on executive roles in the telecommunications sector, including a prominent position as the CEO of the postal and telecommunications company and later Sonera.
