Thousands of sea biscuits found dead on beach in SP coast; VIDEO
Thousands of sea biscuits have been found dead on a beach in Ilha Comprida, São Paulo, raising concerns among residents.
Thousands of sea biscuits, also known as sand dollars, have appeared dead along the sandy shores of a beach in Ilha Comprida, located on the coast of São Paulo. This phenomenon occurred in the Balneário Marusca neighborhood, catching the attention of local residents who recorded videos of the scene. They reported a strong smell in the area, indicating a significant die-off of these marine creatures.
Oceanographer Rodrigo Martins from the Instituto do Mar (IMar) analyzed this occurrence and suggested that while it may seem alarming, such events can be common. He noted that sea biscuits are related to sea urchins and starfish, typically inhabiting shallow sandy regions. The specialist mentioned that environmental variations, such as significant changes in salinity and temperature and increased turbulence in the water, could contribute to the mortality observed among these animals.
Martins emphasized that further examinations would be necessary to ascertain the exact cause of the mortality. Understanding these occurrences is crucial, as they could indicate broader ecological changes or disruptions in the marine environment, potentially impacting local biodiversity and marine health in the area.
