Presented the National Strategy for the protection of cultural heritage from the effects of climate change
Greece has introduced a National Strategy to safeguard its cultural heritage from climate change impacts, spearheaded by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.
Today, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni unveiled Greece's National Strategy aimed at protecting cultural heritage from the impacts of climate change. This strategy has been developed within the framework of the project "Protection of Iconic Sites and Cultural Heritage Monuments from Climate Change," which is funded with 22 million euros from the Recovery and Resilience Fund. It represents a significant step in Greece's national effort to address the ramifications of climate change on the cultural sector and aims to enhance the resilience of the country's cultural heritage.
The National Strategy was crafted by the Ministry of Culture's Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the National Research Foundation. Its development and implementation involved creative synergy with the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, as well as other key administrative bodies, reflecting a comprehensive approach to securing heritage against environmental challenges. This initiative underscores the importance of a multi-institutional effort in addressing pressing issues related to climate change.
Overall, this strategic plan not only focuses on the preservation of physical monuments but also highlights the need for sustainable practices and policies that may protect cultural assets against the deteriorative effects of climate change. It signifies Greece's commitment to protecting its rich cultural fabric for future generations, recognizing that climate change poses a direct threat to its historical and cultural identity.
