Eduardo Leite downplays the PSD's performance in research and highlights rejection of Lula and Flávio

Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite has downplayed the underwhelming performance of PSD candidates in recent polls while emphasizing high rejection rates for President Lula and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.

Eduardo Leite, the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, addressed the recent findings of Datafolha that reflect poor polling for candidates from the PSD, a political party to which he belongs. During his remarks on Monday, Leite remarked that current electoral polls should be interpreted as gauges of voter sentiment rather than concrete measures of electoral intention. He pointed out that both President Lula of the Workers' Party and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro face significant rejection, an important factor influencing voters.

According to the latest Datafolha survey, President Lula registers a rejection rate of 46%, while Senator Flávio Bolsonaro is close behind with 45%. In contrast, the most notable PSD candidates have significantly lower rejection rates, with Ratinho Jr. at 19%, Leite at 15%, and Ronaldo Caiado at 14%. Leite's comments might reflect both an attempt to bolster his party's standing amid dismal polling numbers and a strategic emphasis on the opposition's vulnerabilities as the election approaches.

In terms of actual voter intention, Ratinho Jr. leads among the PSD contenders with 7% in a hypothetical first-round matchup against Lula and Flávio, who would receive 38% and 32%, respectively. Meanwhile, Caiado and Leite trail with 4% and 3%, respectively, indicating the PSD’s struggle to capture voter engagement compared to their competitors. This landscape suggests that while the PSD candidates face challenges in terms of popularity, the pronounced rejection of their opponents presents a potential opportunity for strategic campaigning ahead of the elections.
