The tugboat has still not been pulled off the shoal in the Skulte port water area

Efforts to rescue a tugboat stuck on a shoal in Skulte port have yet to succeed, with the captain stating that favorable weather conditions are still needed.

In the Skulte port water area, the tugboat remains stuck on a shoal despite attempts to refloat it. The port manager, Igors Akulovs, confirmed that yesterday's efforts were unsuccessful, and additional waiting for favorable weather conditions is necessary. Although the tugboat was inspected and deemed stable without posing environmental threats, the ongoing struggle indicates the challenges faced in managing maritime operations amidst adverse conditions.

On March 3rd, a drifting mass of ice caused by rapidly changing wind directions led to the tugboat being pushed onto a shoal in the Riga Gulf at the Skulte port. The situation escalated to the point where the five-person crew aboard needed to be evacuated due to safety concerns. The evacuation was executed by the National Armed Forces (NBS) helicopter after a request for assistance was issued by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC).

The presence of large ice formations under the tugboat not only complicates the current situation but also delays potential rescue efforts. As winter conditions persist, maritime services are under pressure to devise a plan to safely extract the vessel without risking further incidents or environmental damage. The ongoing situation at Skulte port serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities that maritime operations face in extreme weather conditions.
