Ugandan runner Kiplimo breaks half marathon record

Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo broke the half marathon world record with a time of 57 minutes and 20 seconds at the Lisbon race, surpassing the previous record set by Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha.

Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda has reclaimed the world half marathon title by setting a new record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds at the Lisbon half marathon. This achievement not only highlights Kiplimo's exceptional speed but also demonstrates his capacity for endurance, as he finished ten seconds ahead of the previous record held by Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha.

During the race, Kiplimo started with an aggressive pace, completing the first five kilometers in just 13:28 minutes. He initially had competitors Nikoa Kipkorir and Gilbert Kiprotich tailing him, yet it was Kiplimo’s strategic running, especially in the final stretches, that allowed him to maintain his lead and secure the victory. His split time of 13:31 minutes between the 15 to 20-kilometer marks was crucial in clinching the record, demonstrating not only his physical prowess but his tactical approach to racing under pressure.

This victory marks Kiplimo's return to form after having briefly lost the world record. He previously set a record of 57:31 on the same course in 2021 but had it taken from him in Valencia in 2024. After the race, he expressed immense joy about breaking the world record again, revealing his mindset during the race and how he pushed himself to achieve this new milestone.
