Classes resume after suspension due to rain in Juiz de Fora; homeless families were taken to hotels and rented houses
Classes resumed in Juiz de Fora after a two-week suspension due to severe flooding that led to numerous casualties and widespread displacement.
Classes in municipal, state, and federal schools in Juiz de Fora resumed on Monday after being suspended for nearly two weeks due to severe rainfall that caused devastating floods, resulting in 65 fatalities and leaving over 8,500 individuals homeless or displaced. The resumption of classes comes amidst ongoing challenges as certain educational institutions remain closed either because they are being used as shelters or are still undergoing cleanup due to the flood's impact.
Specifically, 12 municipal schools that served as emergency shelters for displaced families are scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, while others that suffered severe damage from the floods do not yet have a date set for their reopening. The Colégio de Aplicação João XXIII has been closed by the Civil Defense for urgent repairs, highlighting continued safety concerns in the area. The situation remains fluid as local authorities assess the conditions of these facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of returning students.
In addition to the resumption of classes in primary and secondary education, the Federal University of Juiz de Fora also announced the continuation of its undergraduate and graduate programs on the same day. Courses in fields including Physiotherapy, Nursing, Medicine, and Dentistry will begin again, reflecting a broader return to normalcy amidst ongoing recovery efforts. The educational community is facing a critical period of adjustment and resilience as it navigates the effects of the recent natural disaster while striving to restore stability in educational services for the local population.
