Pavement collapses at the exit of the Maria Maluf complex, closing lanes and causing congestion in south São Paulo
A section of pavement collapsed due to heavy rainfall in São Paulo, causing significant traffic congestion and lane closures.
A section of the pavement collapsed on Afonso D'Escragnolle Taunay Avenue at the exit of the Maria Maluf traffic complex in Jabaquara, southern São Paulo, due to the heavy rains that occurred on Sunday, October 8th. As a result of the collapse, two lanes were closed, leading to substantial traffic delays, with reports indicating over 232 kilometers of traffic congestion, a 32% increase compared to normal conditions. The Sao Paulo Traffic Engineering Company, CET, noted that the impact of the closures was notably felt in the city on Monday morning, October 9th, as commuters faced extended travel times.
The area has been significantly affected by the recent storms, with the Ipiranga and Jabaquara neighborhoods experiencing the highest rainfall, measuring 103.8 mm and 69 mm, respectively. The severe weather led to the overflowing of local streams, including Moinho Velho and Ipiranga, which contributed to flooding on nearby roads. The severe weather conditions on Sunday have led to multiple incidents, including additional disruptions reported at Congonhas Airport, where part of the terminal wall collapsed onto Avenida dos Bandeirantes due to the high volume of rain.
In response to the collapse, the administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes has dispatched teams to the site on Monday morning to conduct the necessary repairs. As the region continues to deal with the aftermath of the storm, local authorities are under pressure to address the infrastructure vulnerabilities exacerbated by the heavy rains, particularly in low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. The combination of extreme weather and infrastructural challenges highlights the need for better urban planning and emergency management in São Paulo to mitigate future incidents of this nature.
