Handbags on Display at Käru Museum Featuring Sirje Karise, Anu Välba, Anne Veski and Others

Käru Museum in Järva County has opened an exhibition showcasing bags, including historical pieces and those belonging to notable Estonians.

The Käru Museum in Järva County has launched an exhibition dedicated to handbags, which includes both period-specific bags and those formerly owned by well-known Estonians such as Sirje Karise, Anu Välba, and Anne Veski. This exhibition not only focuses on the fashion aspect of handbags but provides a glimpse into the evolution of market bags over time. The exhibition was conceptualized by Aljona Suržikova, inspired by a similar exhibition in Ukraine titled 'Women’s Burden', which highlighted various bags that women use across different contexts.

Suržikova’s initiative stems from her observation of the cultural significance and the stories behind handbags, linking everyday objects to broader themes of identity and memory. The exhibition features photographs from Ukraine along with artworks by Pallas' young artists, who are encouraged to draw inspiration from what they carry in their bags. As Suržikova explained, the project aims to stimulate reflection on personal belongings and their meanings, emphasizing that one doesn't need to travel far for artistic inspiration.

In addition to the artistic and cultural aspects, the exhibition is designed to evoke nostalgia and recognition among visitors. Suržikova notes that people want to feel a connection to their past, seeking familiarity in items such as their grandmother's handbag or a bag from their own childhood. This blend of personal memory and cultural exploration makes the exhibition significant for both local attendees and those interested in Estonian history and contemporary art.
