The representative of VMI on the funding of 'Nemuno aušra': undoubtedly raises suspicions
A VMI representative expressed concerns over potential irregularities in the funding of 'Nemuno aušra' during a meeting of the Anti-Corruption Commission.
During a session of the Lithuanian Parliament's Anti-Corruption Commission, a representative from the State Tax Inspectorate (VMI), A. Klerauskas, raised alarms about the financing of the 'Nemuno aušra' initiative, stating that it raises unequivocal suspicions. He indicated that when suspicions arise, thorough evaluations are conducted by VMI to assess whether individuals can substantiate their financial statements with real income sources. This process is described as complex and labor-intensive, yet vital for maintaining integrity in financial disclosures.
Klerauskas referenced a recent political campaign where the Central Electoral Commission had referred over 20 individuals to VMI for a comprehensive evaluation due to concerns regarding their financial declarations. He confirmed that while the evaluations included a detailed review of reported balances and accumulation possibilities, no discrepancies were identified that completely contradicted the reported financial flows of the individuals in question. This finding is crucial as it suggests that, despite the suspicions, the investigation did not reveal clear evidence of wrongdoing relating to the declared assets.
The ongoing discussions highlight the importance of transparency in political financing in Lithuania, with VMI’s probe serving as a critical mechanism for addressing potential malfeasance. Klerauskas vowed that all evaluations are based on available information and stressed the necessity of conducting deep checks whenever there are doubts regarding financial claims, ensuring that public trust is upheld in the country's financial regulatory framework.
