Kristaps Andželo, son of former Latvian basketball player Kaspars Kambala, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for drug trafficking in Ireland.
Kristaps Andželo, the son of former Latvian basketball player Kaspars Kambala, has been sentenced for his involvement in drug trafficking after being apprehended at Dublin Airport. According to reports from the Irish media 'Irish Mirror', Andželo was arrested on June 23, 2025, while attempting to import marijuana valued at approximately €381,000 from Bangkok. At just 22 years old, he had been aiming to smuggle in a significant quantity of drugs, which led authorities to take decisive action upon suspicion of his behavior at the airport.
The incident escalated when airport security found Kambala's luggage suspicious, prompting them to conduct an x-ray examination. Upon investigation, they discovered that Kambala's luggage was locked, and he claimed that he did not possess the key. Security personnel had to cut the lock with metal cutters, leading to the revelation of 38 vacuum-sealed bags containing a total of 19 kilograms of marijuana. Despite the overwhelming evidence, Andželo asserted that the luggage belonged to someone else, and he only intended to meet a contact at the airport to hand over the bag.
This sentencing emphasizes the serious implications surrounding drug trafficking and the legal repercussions faced by individuals involved, particularly those with high-profile backgrounds. Kambala's son took up residence in Nevada, USA, indicating a link between the US and Europe in drug trafficking circuits. As such, this case may also prompt discussions around enhancing airport security measures and international cooperation in curbing drug smuggling activities.
