Siaulian man sentenced for drug trafficking – the man got off with restricted freedom
A man from Šiauliai has been sentenced to one year and three months of restricted freedom for illegally purchasing a large quantity of a psychotropic substance online.
A man from Šiauliai has received a sentence of one year and three months of restricted freedom after being convicted of illegally acquiring a significant amount of a controlled psychotropic substance known as 'PHENIBUT MAX'. The substance, which contains a high concentration of fenibut, was ordered online using his mobile phone on December 11, 2024, and was intended to be sent to him by mail. Customs officials intercepted the package on December 13 at the Kaunas airport post during a routine check, leading to the man's arrest. The court found that despite admitting his guilt, the defendant had been aware that this particular substance was banned in Lithuania. He argued that he used fenibut to help alleviate his anxiety, although this justification did not influence the court's decision on the sentence. As part of his punishment, the man is required to work throughout the duration of his sentence and is prohibited from using any psychoactive substances unless prescribed by a doctor. This case underscores the ongoing challenges Lithuania faces regarding drug trafficking and the distribution of controlled substances via online platforms. The authorities are likely to increase their vigilance on postal deliveries, especially regarding substances that are either restricted or banned, which raises questions about the efficacy of current regulations on drug imports and the awareness of the public towards such laws.
