A New Spoonful of Familiar Flavors… The Era of Spin-off Variety Shows
The Korean entertainment industry is witnessing a surge in spin-off variety shows that expand on successful original formats.
In recent times, the broadcasting sector in South Korea has highlighted the phenomenon of successful variety shows branching out into spin-offs, regardless of the genre, including travel, sports, and music. These spin-off shows aim to infuse new ideas into well-established formats, allowing for a safe yet potentially repetitive viewing experience, often referred to as a 'double-edged sword.' Television network tvN is set to unveil a spin-off of the successful variety show 'Sisters’ Direct Delivery' next month, although a title has yet to be confirmed. This original show, first aired in 2024, follows cast members engaging in physical labor, such as anchovy shelling, while enjoying seasonal food in a culturally rich small town in Korea. The charming camaraderie and relatable experiences shared among cast members, especially led by the dependable Yeo Jeong-ah, have delighted audiences and led to a second season of the show.
Additionally, ENA's travel variety show 'Global Monopoly World Tour' has launched its spin-off titled 'Crazy Tour' starting from June 28. This original concept features travel YouTubers rolling dice to determine their travel destinations. While 'Global Monopoly World Tour' previously showcased lesser-known travel spots and incorporated chemistry between the guest stars and the YouTubers for viewer enjoyment, 'Crazy Tour' promises an even more thrilling experience as participants take on exhilarating adventures like spear fishing, helicopter herding, oil wrestling, crane bungee jumping, and hot air balloon skydiving. Furthermore, tvN will also air a spin-off of its variety show 'Amazing Saturday' called 'Amazing Thursday' on the 19th, highlighting the ongoing trend of spin-off shows in the Korean entertainment landscape.
