Ogundiran, Usunobun win U.S. collegiate national titles
Nigerian athletes Blessing Ogundiran and Queen Usunobun recently won gold medals at U.S. collegiate championships, with Ogundiran achieving significant personal milestones in sprinting.
Nigerian athletes had a remarkable weekend in the U.S. collegiate athletics scene, with Blessing Ogundiran and Queen Usunobun shining at their respective track and field championships. Ogundiran, competing for Warner University Royals, won the womenβs 60m title at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships by recording a time of 7.31 seconds, further solidifying her reputation as one of the fastest sprinters in the league. Her performance capped off an impressive indoor season where she remained unbeaten in this event.
In addition to her latest victory, Ogundiran matched a long-standing NAIA record earlier in the season, clocking an impressive time of 7.20 seconds during the Sun Conference Indoor Championships held in Florida, thereby equaling the record previously set in 2010 by the accomplished athlete Kimberly Smith. Meanwhile, Usunobun's performance at the NJCAA Championships also highlighted the strength and competitiveness of Nigerian athletes on the international stage, as four Nigerians ended up finishing on the podium across the two championships.
This achievement reflects not just the individual talent of the athletes, but also the growing influence of Nigerian athletes in collegiate sports in the United States. Such successes can pave the way for further opportunities for these athletes, enhancing their profiles and potentially leading to professional careers in sports, while also serving as an inspiration for future generations of Nigerian athletes in track and field.
