Uganda: MP Akol Defends Parliament, Says No Institution in Uganda Is Without Problems

MP Anthony Akol asserts that every institution in Uganda faces challenges, including Parliament, and emphasizes the importance of addressing these issues rather than ignoring them.

Anthony Akol, the Kilak North Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Acholi Parliamentary Group, provided a robust defense of the Ugandan Parliament during a recent talk. He stated that every institution in the country, including Parliament, encounters its set of challenges. By addressing these problems openly, leaders can work on solutions rather than ignoring the realities they face. Akol criticized the notion that Parliament is entirely ineffective, arguing that leaders have a duty to engage with issues and work toward resolving them rather than waiting for 'heavenly' intervention.

In his discussion, Akol acknowledged the limitations of Parliament in solving all the issues plaguing the country, affirming that while the institution plays a significant role in tackling national matters, certain problems will persist and new ones will arise. He underlined that expecting the current or any future Parliament to resolve every single issue is unrealistic. Such expectations could lead to disappointment and a lack of appreciation for the work that is being done within the legislature.

Akol's remarks come at a time when public sentiment about governmental institutions is mixed, particularly regarding their efficiency and effectiveness. By speaking out, he aims to promote a more balanced view of the work being undertaken by Parliament and encourage citizens to engage with their representatives in constructive ways. This dialogue could lead to more collaborative efforts towards addressing national challenges without the expectation of immediate or perfect solutions.
