Kenya: Floods Damage Nairobi Water Pipelines, Disrupt Supply
Heavy rains in Nairobi have caused damage to key water distribution pipelines, leading to significant supply disruptions for residents in several areas.
In Nairobi, heavy rains have resulted in flooding that has severely damaged key water distribution pipelines, creating water supply disruptions for residents in several estates, as reported by the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company. The flooding, attributed to the swollen Nairobi River, has washed away critical infrastructure, affecting areas such as Buruburu, Kariobangi, Dandora, Eastleigh, Kiambiu, Korogocho, and Lower Kabete. The utility company is working to address these issues and restore water supply to the affected regions.
The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company highlighted specific infrastructure that was most impacted, including the Outering Road pipeline at the Nairobi River crossing, the Eastleigh-Kiambiu pipeline, the Korogocho-Dandora pipeline, and the Brookeside Drive distribution line serving Lower Kabete and neighboring areas. As a result of the damage, residents in these estates are experiencing pressing challenges related to water access, which is vital for daily living.
In light of the disruptions, the company's acting Managing Director, Martin Nang'ole, has urged customers to remain patient as rapid efforts are being made to restore normal water supply. The ongoing work by utility teams emphasizes the urgency of reconstructing the damaged infrastructure to ensure consistent water distribution and mitigate the impacts of future rains on water supply in the city.
