Kenya: Heavy Rains Peak in Nairobi As Flood Risk Rises, Met Warns

Heavy rains in Nairobi have peaked, raising concerns about flash floods as warned by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding heavy rains that have intensified across Nairobi and the surrounding counties, particularly between March 4 and March 7. This period is marked by increased probability of flash floods, as the most intense rainfall is predicted to occur, causing concern for residents and local authorities alike.

The advisory highlights that several neighborhoods within Nairobi, including Westlands, Dagoretti, Roysambu, Kibra, Embakasi, Makadara, and Kamukunji, are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with forecasts indicating some areas may receive over 50 millimeters within just 24 hours. These conditions are exacerbated by existing drainage issues in the city which could lead to further complications in transport and daily activities for residents.

The Meteorological Department urges residents to exercise caution during this peak rainfall period and to avoid crossing flooded areas. With the warning in effect until Sunday evening, the agency emphasizes the need for vigilance as the risk of disrupted routines due to flooding increases, particularly for areas noted for poor drainage facilities.
