Drones Become One of the Topics in National Defense Education in Latvian Schools

Drones are now included in the national defense education curriculum in Latvia, reflecting their growing importance in both military and civilian contexts.

National defense education is currently being conducted in nearly 300 educational institutions and their branches throughout Latvia. Students in 10th and 11th grades, as well as those in vocational education programs, are enrolled in specialized courses related to national defense training, which include topics such as stationary shooting, field combat skills, and first aid. A recent development in this curriculum is the inclusion of drone operation training, highlighting the increasing relevance of drones in both defense and crisis management situations.

Under the guidance of instructor Martins Pērkoņkalvs, students from Daugavpils Industrial Technical School are learning skills related to operating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The classroom is equipped with drones and simulators, allowing students to explore and understand how these devices can be integrated into future technologies. They receive hands-on experience in disassembling and assembling drones, recognizing different types, and mastering their operational capabilities. The program was established only recently, indicating a shift in educational approaches to include modern technological advancements in national defense training.

This initiative not only prepares students for potential careers in defense but also equips them with valuable skills applicable in civilian contexts, such as disaster response and humanitarian efforts. By familiarizing young people with the capabilities and uses of drones, Latvia is investing in the next generation of skilled operators who can leverage these technologies in various fields, enhancing both national security and community resilience.
