This year, drone piloting will be taught in State Defense Lessons

The State Defense program in Latvia is expanding its curriculum to include a full day of drone piloting training for students.

In Latvia, the State Defense training program has seen a significant expansion in its curriculum regarding drone piloting. Previously, students received only one hour of instruction on drones per semester, but this year a dedicated training day will be introduced. This initiative is spearheaded by the director of the Youth Guard Center, Colonel Valts Āboliņő, who aims to spark interest in drone technology among the youth.

On this new training day, students will not only learn theoretical aspects of drone operation but also have hands-on experience in piloting drones under the guidance of instructors. Senior Sergeant Dainis Gudermans, a military education expert, emphasized the importance of safety regulations and responsibility in airspace management, as well as practical skills such as take-off, landing, and stable flying. The program aims to provide students with foundational skills, although it acknowledges that professional training cannot be achieved in a single day.

Despite limited resources this year, there are plans to eventually ensure every student has the opportunity to engage with drones. This development reflects a growing recognition of the importance of technological skills in modern defense training and the broader educational framework, preparing students for future opportunities in technology-driven fields.
