Itaewon Special Task Force Before Hearing... Field Verification of 112 and 119 Situation Rooms

The special task force investigating the Itaewon tragedy will conduct a field verification of emergency response systems prior to the upcoming hearings.

The Special Investigative Committee for the Itaewon tragedy is set to conduct hearings on December 12-13 regarding the incident that took place on October 29. This verification process aims to assess the response frameworks of the police and fire authorities during the disaster. The committee has already visited the Seoul Police’s 112 Comprehensive Situation Room and the 119 Comprehensive Disaster Response Center to evaluate the efficacy of their operating systems during the emergency, ensuring proper functioning from disaster signal recognition to on-site response.

During the verification, the task force focused on key areas such as the recognition of danger signals, the handling of reports, the judgment structures during emergency situations, and the coordination between agencies. The aim is to scrutinize the operation of the police and fire emergency response systems to formulate essential questions for the upcoming hearings and gather additional evidence that could guide subsequent recommendations for systemic improvements.

Additionally, the task force plans to visit the Seoul Detention Center to persuade former President Yoon Seok-yeol to attend the hearings, despite his previous communication of unavailability due to ongoing trial schedules. Conversely, former Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min has expressed his willingness to attend. A total of 94 individuals related to the government, police, fire departments, and local authorities have been summoned as witnesses or references for the hearings, signifying the gravity of the inquiry into the Itaewon incident.
