Christ the Redeemer receives purple lighting in honor of International Women's Day
Christ the Redeemer will be illuminated in purple on March 8 to honor International Women's Day and raise awareness of women's rights.
On March 8, in celebration of International Women's Day, the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will be specially illuminated in purple from 8 PM to 10 PM. This lighting symbolizes the recognition of women's historical struggle for equality and better living conditions. The organizers emphasize that this is not only a tribute to women but also a reminder of the continuous fight for their rights and contributions to society.
In conjunction with this celebration, the Santuário Arquidiocesano Cristo Redentor is actively involved in social initiatives aimed at supporting women in vulnerable situations. The Cristo Sustentável Consortium is leading these efforts, which include programs for human development and professional training designed to empower women. In 2025 alone, approximately 7,000 women have received support through these programs, many of whom have experienced some form of violence, highlighting the urgent need for such social interventions.
This acknowledgment and celebration of International Women's Day through the lighting of Christ the Redeemer serves as a powerful message of solidarity and recognition for women’s rights in Brazil. It seeks not only to highlight the struggles women face but also to encourage positive change and community support initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women across the country, particularly those facing inequality and hardship.
