Judge Vacancies: Juan Bautista Mahiques Requests Criminal Records and Financial Data of Candidates to Begin Selection
Juan Bautista Mahiques, the new Minister of Justice in Argentina, has initiated the process for selecting judges by requesting criminal records and financial information from the candidates.
The new Minister of Justice of Argentina, Juan Bautista Mahiques, has officially kicked off the selection process for over 300 judicial positions, including judges, prosecutors, and defenders. In a recent announcement, Mahiques stated that he will be requesting updated criminal records from the National Registry of Recidivism for the shortlisted candidates. This measure is part of a broader effort to ensure that potential candidates meet legal and ethical standards before being appointed to these important roles in the judiciary.
Additionally, Mahiques has mandated that candidates’ financial and tax compliance records be verified by the Agency for Revenue and Customs Control (ARCA). This requirement aims to ensure that all individuals being considered for these judicial positions have been transparent and responsible in their financial dealings, reinforcing the integrity of the selection process. This initiative follows the guidelines established in Decree 588/2003, which outlines procedures for filling judicial vacancies.
This rigorous selection procedure is critical for maintaining the credibility of the Argentine justice system, especially given the significant number of vacancies — 200 judges, 72 defenders, and 65 prosecutors. By prioritizing comprehensive background checks, Mahiques aims to promote a judiciary that is not only competent but also possesses a sound ethical foundation, potentially regaining public trust in judicial proceedings and decisions.
