Juan Bautista Mahiques replaces Cúneo Libarona and is the new Minister of Justice
Juan Bautista Mahiques has been appointed as Argentina's new Minister of Justice, succeeding Mariano Cúneo Libarona.
Juan Bautista Mahiques has officially been appointed as the new Minister of Justice of Argentina, following his predecessor, Mariano Cúneo Libarona. Before this appointment, Mahiques served as the Attorney General of Buenos Aires, establishing himself as a significant figure in the Argentinian judiciary. He is also the son of Carlos Alberto Mahiques, a prominent Cassation judge. The announcement was made via a social media post from President Javier Milei, who acknowledged Cúneo Libarona's contribution during his tenure of over two years in the position.
In President Milei's post, he expressed gratitude to Cúneo Libarona and expressed his confidence in Mahiques, stating that the new minister would continue efforts to restore Argentina's greatness. Along with Mahiques, Santiago Viola has been confirmed to take on the role of deputy minister, marking a shift in the Ministry’s leadership dynamics. Viola is currently an attorney and is affiliated with La Libertad Avanza, the libertarian political movement in Argentina, taking over from Sebastián Amerio.
Cúneo Libarona's resignation had been anticipated, as he had been looking to exit the position for the past six months. Mahiques' new role as Minister of Justice indicates a significant shift in the Argentinian government as it continues to form its policies and strategies amid an evolving political landscape. This change may have implications for the judicial system, especially with Mahiques' background and connections within the judiciary, potentially affecting the future direction of justice reforms in the country.
