Emicida and Nobel Prize Winner Launch Children's Books on Global Poverty
A duo of children's books created by Nobel Prize-winning economist Esther Duflo will be launched in Brazil, focusing on global poverty and collective solutions.
The upcoming launch of two children's books, "Volta por cima" and "Conta comigo," co-created by Nobel Prize-winning economist Esther Duflo, will take place in Brazil this May. These works are aimed at younger audiences and tackle the critical themes of global poverty, encouraging readers to think about collective approaches to alleviate this pressing issue. Additionally, Brazilian musician Emicida will contribute commentary in the editions, making the content more relatable to local readers.
This initiative is a collaboration between Companhia das Letrinhas and Letrus, a platform that combines artificial intelligence with pedagogical principles. The books are part of a larger educational framework, serving as the foundation for a national writing olympiad organized by Letrus, thereby integrating literacy education with pressing social themes. The engagement of young readers in critical thinking about poverty aims to foster a sense of collective responsibility and awareness.
The characters featured in the stories—Imeuni, Tsongai, and Bibir—are situated in imaginary settings that reflect scenarios in regions like Africa, Asia, or South America. The narratives encourage children to confront real-world poverty challenges and contemplate actionable solutions. Importantly, Duflo's books contain guidelines at the end to assist adults in guiding children through the reading experience, ensuring that discussions around poverty and its implications are meaningful and constructive.
