Shadow of gas crisis even at the cremation ground! Gas-based cremation halted in Vaikunth Dham

The gas supply crisis due to ongoing conflict in the Gulf region has led to the suspension of gas-based cremation services at Pune's Vaikunth Dham.

The ongoing hostilities in the Gulf region have begun to impact essential services in Pune, India, particularly affecting the largest crematorium known as Vaikunth Dham. According to Pune Municipal Corporation's Executive Engineer Nilesh Kalekar, there is currently only enough LPG available for two cremations, with each cremation requiring approximately 18 kilograms of LPG. The limited gas supply is a direct consequence of the geopolitical scenario, leading to a critical situation at the crematorium.

Vaikunth Dham has three gas-based cremation units and four electric cremation furnaces. Due to the shortage of LPG, gas-based cremations have been completely halted, forcing families to turn to the electric cremation facilities instead. This shift not only highlights the impact of the gas crisis on cultural practices related to death and mourning but also raises concerns about the potential backlog in cremation services as families adapt to the new available options.

Authorities have clarified that electric cremations are currently being prioritized until the gas supply returns to normal. This situation exemplifies how international conflicts can have localized consequences, affecting even the most intimate aspects of life and death in communities far removed from the conflict zone itself.
