Leave protectionist attic, join the China market gym: Wang Yi to Europe
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urges Europe to abandon protectionism and embrace economic cooperation with China during a press conference.
During a recent press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of China-Europe economic and trade relations, describing them as characterized by complementary advantages. He warned against building barriers and fences, suggesting that such actions would lead to self-isolation for Europe. Wang's comments were made on the sidelines of the two sessions, a significant political event in China where national policies are discussed and formulated.
Wang further encouraged European nations to move away from their protectionist 'attic' and join the 'gym' of the Chinese market, indicating that such a shift could enhance their competitiveness. He highlighted the interdependence between China and the EU, asserting that intertwined interests should not be perceived as threats but rather as opportunities for openness and collaboration. The minister's phraseology suggested a vision of mutual benefit and strengthened ties.
According to recent customs data, China’s trade with the European Union reached 5.93 trillion yuan (approximately US$860 billion) in 2025, marking a 6% increase from the previous year. This figure underscores the significant economic relationship between China and Europe, reinforcing Wang's message of cooperation. By framing his arguments positively, Wang Yi aimed to persuade European leaders to engage more proactively with the Chinese market and to view economic partnership as a path towards mutual growth rather than a risk of dependency.
