UFLA Laboratory is Qualified to Conduct Arbovirus Tests

The Federal University of Lavras' Molecular Diagnosis Laboratory in Southern Minas has been authorized to perform molecular diagnostics for several arboviruses.

The Federal University of Lavras (Ufla) in Southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, has strengthened its capabilities in the fight against arboviruses by being authorized to conduct molecular diagnostics for the oropouche virus, mayaro virus, and yellow fever. This advancement is significant as it allows for the detection of very low viral loads in patients' blood, enabling healthcare providers to accurately identify the specific virus responsible for the symptoms, which can often mimic those of dengue fever.

Professor Bruno Del Bianco, the coordinator of LabMol, emphasized the importance of these tests in providing precise diagnostics. With the symptoms of arboviral diseases closely resembling those of dengue, having access to accurate testing is crucial for effective treatment and management of these illnesses. This development comes amid concerns over rising cases of arboviruses in Brazil, particularly in Minas Gerais, where there were approximately 1,700 reported cases of oropouche and 32 cases of yellow fever in the past year.

As the region continues to face challenges from mosquito-borne diseases, the ability of the LabMol to perform these tests ensures that healthcare providers can respond more effectively to outbreaks and manage patient care better. Enhanced diagnostic capabilities not only aid in individual treatment but also play a vital role in public health monitoring and response efforts to arboviral diseases in Brazil.
